I have fallen down a crochet rabbit hole just recently. It all started with the wonderful, if somewhat never ending project of the Chunky Cable Cardigan designed by Kat Goldin of Slugs on the Refrigerator. As a result, I have completely and utterly fallen in love with chunky crochet.
I keep wondering if it’s simply due to my own idleness, everything works up so quickly, which is an absolute joy. So far, I have mainly done small, chunky projects. A couple of cowls (or snoods if you were around in the eighties) and a scarf. The cowls took only a couple of evenings. It’s more than just how quickly things can be finished though. I have also just finished the most beautiful scarf from a pattern by Victoria at Owl and Accordian. It was one of those projects that as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to make as soon as I possibly could and the finished product does not disappoint.
I’ve noticed that any knitted accesories that I’ve bought tend to be chunky knits and I am really drawn to the textures the squidgy, chunky yarn can give. I am also coming to the conclusion that chunky wool can carry off acrylic blends better than a finer yarn. I have to admit to being a bit of a yarn snob. I like natural fibres, or at least a very high percentage in each yarn to be natural. That can be rather expensive, but I’ve found some lovely, soft and non-squeaky (very important) yarn in a great range of colours. I would love your recommendations of some chunky, natural fibres if you have any though, for those special projects. (ie: the small ones for me!)
Chunky knits seem to be big in interiors over the last couple of years and having done blankets and cushions in finer yarns, that took forever, I am keen to try some chunkier options. I have been avoiding larger projects for ages and this could be the answer. We are looking to update our living room soon and I shall definitely be trying a chunky cushion cover in a colour that pops and a yarn that can be chunked in the washing machine.
Chunky is most definitely the new black.

Yes, yes, yes! I have just finished my first ever blanket and giant cushion cover in chunky yarn, so satisfying! I chose the ripple pattern which was a bit daft as a beginner, it went wrong, I started again (hence matching cushion cover) and finished it in a month! Better late than never – it’s T’s leaving blanket and he’s in his second year now!
